What make us humans?

With any doubts, the moment I most enjoy at the end of a creative process is remembering the beginning of the process, in which you had no idea what was going to happen from some no-sense exploration. And, of course, the fact that people with completly different points of view participate in this process make it an even more enriching journey.

Together with Sara, we had to create a wearable for the upper part of the body: the head. Fine Arts and Engineering. Concepts about identity and how to modify the face through light, haute couture with low cost material...

The previous images are some of the references that we found. They fit the concept we had been discussing and were also “objects” created in a simple way with relatively everyday materials. From that moment on, it was time to play with different materials and... a head.

The possibilities of plastic spoons made us choose this option and we continue with the idea of haute couture and a headdress that incorporates technology.

Conceptualization

Analyzing what the head represents and focusing on the face, we see that it is the part of the body that is most exposed to society. Through the face we express emotions, expose or hide identity, it is the main social agency, evoking all kinds of reactions to the other in the development of social interaction, allowing or denying access to the public and private. The face humanizes the subject in a certain way, that is, a person is socially accepted or not because of their face and its similarity with the other to generate empathy or liking, hence people with deformities or physical variations are taboo or marginalized within the communities. In this way, accessories and wearables play metaphorically for or against the idea of identity, enhancing or hacking it as a filter before presenting it to the other.

Humans?

In the proposal for the upper part of the body or the head and collecting the concepts discussed, we think about the ritual of identity, and the construction of a character, asking the question: What makes us human?

We speculate about the future and the limits of the body, beauty, technology and the self. Based on the concepts that we associate with the face, we aim to explore and generate reflection on the cultural and emotional impacts that cutting-edge science and technology have on the redesign of the body through wearables (implants, prostheses, extensions, helmets, masks, headdresses, etc...) using art, design and technology around the idea of the face.

We focus on the sensory. Since the head is where the greatest number of senses are concentrated. The device can play two roles: enhancer, facilitator or, on the contrary, obstruct, deny or replace the image of the character; denying identity and transmuting to the non-human pole.

We are quite satisfied with the aesthetic and conceptual result of the piece and as a result of this whole process, new ideas arise to be addressed.

The project was exhibited at MUTEK ES 2019 (Barcelona, Spain), as part of the collective exhibition called "Bye human" in collaboration with BAU.
